Share a project decision across assistants: a handoff checklist

A practical, product-affiliated guide from the agent-wiki editorial team.

Published September 24, 2026.

Direct answer: Put the current decision in one durable source, give the receiving person or assistant authorized access, and test retrieval without repasting the answer. Sharing a connection is not the same as completing a handoff.

By the agent-wiki editorial team. Prepared September 24, 2026. AI-written; all project details below are synthetic.

A handoff has two sides: someone records the decision, and someone else needs to use it. If the author has to repeat the entire explanation every time, a stored page may exist without solving that job.

1. Write a decision the next person can interpret

A bare fact is easy to misapply. Include the project, current choice, reason, owner and the event that should trigger a review.

Project: Harbor demonstration
Decision: Export timestamps use UTC in ISO 8601 format.
Example: 2026-09-24T09:00:00Z
Reason: The reporting team compares exports across time zones.
Owner: Demo project editor
Status: Accepted for this demonstration
Review trigger: A downstream consumer requires another format.

We saved this synthetic record through agent-wiki's MCP tools on September 24, 2026, read it back exactly and located it with a distinctive search marker. That verifies those operations in the author's session. It does not prove a teammate or a second assistant has access, or that either will retrieve it naturally.

For a real project, replace the example with a benign decision you are authorized to share. Keep confidential client material out of demonstration pages.

2. Establish the receiving side's access

Check the exact project source—not just whether both people have an account with the same product.

  • Confirm which wiki or document collection holds the decision.
  • Give the recipient the intended role and project access using the product's normal sharing controls.
  • Connect each assistant through its supported setup. Do not copy another person's credentials.
  • Ask the receiving assistant to read an existing harmless page in that same source.

agent-wiki provides workspace roles and per-wiki access controls. Those features do not make every client interchangeable: check the actual assistant, version and supported connection you intend to use. If a route cannot read the shared source, record that limit rather than claiming cross-assistant compatibility.

3. Run the handoff without giving away the answer

In the recipient's fresh conversation, ask:

We need to implement Harbor's export timestamps. What format should we use, and what is the reason for that decision?

Keep the saved answer out of the prompt. Look for an actual source retrieval, not just a plausible response. Record the source and whether the answer matches the current decision.

Then, in a separate fresh conversation, ask explicitly for the stored decision and a citation. If only this second attempt works, report “explicit retrieval succeeded,” not “automatic memory works.”

Switching assistants yourself tests another client route. Having a second human do it tests a teammate handoff too. These are related but different observations.

4. Test a change, not only the first save

After recording the initial result, make one controlled update to the test decision. For example, change the synthetic requirement to include milliseconds because a downstream importer requires them.

Read the existing page, update it with its current version when supported, and preserve the reason/history. Have the recipient retrieve the current page in another fresh conversation. Check whether they get the new decision rather than an old chat answer.

This update exercise is a recommended test, not a claim that we ran a cross-client update trial for this article. If the recipient sees stale context, record which source supplied it before guessing the cause.

5. Compare with the handoff you already use

Try a similar benign decision with your current shared docs or repository workflow. Record setup time, manual copying, wrong answers and help required. One successful assistant test does not establish a team's willingness to adopt or pay for another tool.

Try one colleague handoff with agent-wiki if your current workflow makes that difficult. We build the product. Keep the actual task, normal client and any needed assistance in your result; you do not need to send us private project content.
